Green And Black's Chocolate Story

Green and Blacks guest and passion to develop truly delicious organic chocolate lead to the creation of the products we know today. It started in 1991 when the founder of Whole Earth, a UK pioneer in organic food, Craig Sams was sent a 70% cocoa dark chocolate bar made from organic cocoa beans to try. Later on his wife Josephine Fairley an environmental columnist for the London Times and known chocoholic, found a half eaten bar of organic chocolate on Craig’s desk and tried it. The rich and bold taste was unlike any chocolate she had ever tasted; she was convinced other chocolate lovers would feel the same.

Josephine and Craig set out on their mission to bring the world’s first organic chocolate to the public and it was enough to make chocolate fans the world over take notice. To no surprise, the brand would go on to build a loyal following. In 1994 while visiting Belize, they found out that local cocoa farmers were being affected by the decreasing cocoa bean prices. They agreed to pay the farmers a fair price for the cocoa beans and this inspired the flavor Maya Gold, which was labeled after the ancient Kukuh drink of the Mayans. Doing business this way seemed right and fair to them and the Maya Gold brand earned the UK’s Fair-trade mark.

One of the questions asked most, is how Green and Black’s got their name. Well there is no Mr. Green or Mrs. Black. Craig and Josephine created the name to symbolize the brands foundations, with green standing for organic and black for the deep, rich almost black color of the chocolate.
